I disagree. Isn't a "thought for another" as a reason most of the times just an excuse to justify ones actions? I think it is. This would mean that it is actually for the person who is acting in that case. That would mean that the action itself is no different from when one honestly does it for oneself. This would mean that either every action is meaningless or every action is meaningful regardless of the driving force behind it.
You forget that this is Fairy Tail, the show based pretty much off friendship and nothing else. This show is so full of shit it's not even funny, so it's best not to take it seriously.
It most likely has it's moments (I haven't watched it as it's not my type of anime), so I wouldn't really say it's that bad. It just has a different targeted audience. Though I still disagree with what the quote is saying.
